EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) shielding is a technique used to protect electronic devices and sensitive equipment from the unwanted influence of electromagnetic fields. Electromagnetic interference can occur when electromagnetic waves from one electronic device or source interfere with the proper functioning of another nearby electronic device. This interference can lead to signal degradation, data corruption, and other operational issues.
The issues with electromagnetic interference can both be accidental or on purpose. Accidental interference can be signals from other devices unrelated to your device interfering with your device, whereas purposeful interference can be intruders or unwanted individuals interfering with your device by either interfering with the signal or obtaining confidential information from the signals that your device is emitting.
Therefore, EMI shielding protects the device from both electromagnetic interference and disruption of signals and prevents sensitive information from being leaked out of the device – so to speak.
EMI shielding is essential in various industries, including telecommunication, aerospace, medical devices, and other industries where a strong signal is vital for the device’s proper functioning. It is also crucial for devices that contain or transfer confidential information.
EMI shielding in front of displays work by installing a thin and fine mesh in front of the display. This mesh can be either copper or stainless steel and can be integrated into the cover glass as a composite solution between two display glasses or mounted on the back of the cover glass to ensure that the display remains readable and protected from the outside environment.
Since the rest of the enclosure is also shielded from electromagnetic interference, installing EMI shielding in front of the display ensures that the device is protected everywhere. The mesh and the rest of the device’s enclosure are integrated with an electrical contact that is applied around the whole perimeter of the display window. This connection is either conductive silver or nickel paint combined with conducting gaskets or glue.
Our EMI shielding solutions for displays are called Solaris Shield™️ and Combi Shield™️. You can read more about these solutions by clicking here.
In summary, EMI shielding is a technique used to prevent electromagnetic interference. EMI shielding in displays is crucial since the whole device must be shielded to avoid leakage through the display.
Our EMI shielding solutions for displays ensure that, along with the rest of the enclosure, the application doesn’t suffer from electromagnetic interference.
