About Profoto

Profoto is an established manufacturer of flashes for both amateur and professional image creators.

The company produces flashes in all kinds of shapes and sizes, one of which is a fast and high-quality flash called the Pro-11. Click here to see our cover glass solution and read more about the Pro-11.

Light is the key to all image creation. A good flash is one of the most important elements when creating high-quality images in a studio setup.

Challenge

To meet the high demands of professional photographers worldwide, the company needed a cover glass that complied with regulations while adhering to the design and performance requirements of the unit.

Solution

The cover glass solution for the Pro-11 flash is a polycarbonate S105/25 with Hard Mat and black silkscreen print.

PMMA panels are usually the chosen cover glass for these kinds of applications due to the excellent optical properties of acrylic.

However, in this case, Profoto has regulatory requirements that the cover glass has to live up to, as well as application considerations, which is why polycarbonate was chosen instead of PMMA. While polycarbonate doesn’t have as good optical quality as PMMA, it has an impact resistance that makes up for it for this specific application.

With the silk screen printing and Hard Mat™ surface treatment, ProFoto ended up with a solution that fit their design and durability requirements perfectly. The tinted polycarbonate results in a black panel effect when the unit is off, a design requirement from Profoto.

Lastly, the cover glass solution has an adhesive applied to ease mounting onto the unit, saving both time and money by making assembly easier and minimizing scratching and other mistakes.
